Day 23: Salt Lake City

Monday July 4

Fourth of July finds us in Salt Lake City for the day.  We have made plans to meet Eric Decker at his place and spend the day with him.  Scott and Eric were classmates at UNH.  Eric lives downtown in a high rise building which has a pool and roof access.  We get to his apartment about 11:30 and we are welcomed by a beautiful cat, which the girls love.  Eric has a laser beam that she chases around and the girls enjoyed using that.  We go out for Chinese food – being the 4th of July, there really isn’t any traffic in the city and there are not many restaurants open.

We enjoyed a tour of Salt Lake City from the roof access (where the girls found a hot tub to stick their feet into).  Eric pointed out the world’s largest copper mine in the area and the Great Salt Lake in the distance.  I had wanted to visit and swim in the salt lake but everyone we have met along our trip has not recommended it.  The area is known for its bugs and the water itself is about 70% salt so you are covered with white when you get out and need to shower.  Eric said he visited the marina once and all the boats had sludge on them.  We enjoyed a nice swim at t

he indoor pool and hot tub instead.

When we return to the camper Ed and Cheryl are there.  They had a delay at the airport and arrive later than planned but safely.  We enjoyed a quiet evening at the camper.    We cooked a steak, corn on the cob and potato dinner complete with strawberry shortcake.  We heard a few fire works after 9pm but couldn’t see many of them.  The 4 gals played Apples to Apples after dinner.  Scott and I gave up our bed for his parents to sleep on and make up the fold out couch.  It is not as bad as it could be and we are fast asleep.
